Hope everyone’s had a great Christmas and New Year’s
andi, our site editor, already covered Affect3D’s recent and upcoming changes. So in this piece, I’ll lay out my personal thoughts on how 3DX in general will develop in the coming year.
3DX in 2016
While there isn’t much news on the production front for Affect3D itself, things developed nicely for 3DX at large. Tumblr, despite have changed ownership twice in recent times and even with its adult policies in doubt, continues to be the hub for the creative porn with many artists choosing it as their blogging platform.
On the software front, Daz Studio has firmly established itself as the go-to place for casual still 3DX art. Supporting its cause are tech advances like the fast GPU renderer Iray and a new generation of Genesis character models. Poser, on the other hand, seemingly loses market share with each passing year. Meanwhile, as limited as it may be, Source Film Maker reigns as the tool of choice for a growing casual 3DX animation scene. Its notoriety among video game porn makers for allowing the use of copyrighted assets certainly helps
This rise in popularity has been fueled to a large degree by new ways of financially supporting one’s art. Patreon, that Kickstarter-like offshoot with integration for ongoing financial backing, paved the way for many artists to earn a living. Just as well, our own store offers (I’m proud to say) an equally enticing opportunity for many artists to fully support themselves. The bottom line is that 3DX is feeding mouths, in more ways than one, which is amazing
3DX in 2017
Let’s get the bad news out of the way first. UK will soon be the first country in an otherwise sexually liberal Europe to block all porn sites without a draconian age gate. And if that wasn’t bad enough, Trump, as the new US president-elect, may commit to stricter enforcement of obscenity laws. These will certainly affect Internet pornography including 3DX. Sure, we’ll find ways around barriers these governments may throw up. But it may potentially be a huge step backwards for freedom of speech, and it will certainly continue to marginalize sexual expression. Let’s hope this is one election promise that falls by the wayside.
Still, 3DX has, I think, amazing potential to find its footing in both the casual and professional markets. I’ve been saying that 3DX games are unquestionably the end-game and will become it’s own industry, just like the gaming market has outgrown the mainstream film industry. But I don’t think we’re there yet. Development over the last years has been stagnant as quality 3DX games are still far and few between. It seems the leap from hobby to production studio is a challenging one.
A better and simpler approach are mobile games. The explosive growth of mobile games due to the ever-growing popularity of smartphones is undeniable. With at least one of the big two ecosystems, Android, taking a hands-off approach, 3DX is well placed to carve itself a niche into this incredibly big market.
Another important step for 3DX is to create its own assets market. This would be a market that creates its own range of purposely-built character assets, instead of re-purposed or copyrighted material. It could cultivate an enthusiast’s scene with pros in the making.
And it goes without saying that the cornerstone to games and production films is quality animation. The more 3DX develops this key component, the more recognition it will receive.
Thank Yous
In closing I’d like to thank our growing number of artists, staff, contractors and partners who’ve helped Affect3D.com continue our mission to promote 3DX in providing urgent relief for even the most severe cases of blue balls and aching pussies across the globe.
