In the world of retail, most sales make sense in that they coincide with a celebratory holiday or period of time that ordinarily warrants the purchasing of specific products and services. In the weeks before Halloween, candy and costumes are often on sale. Prior to July 4th, barbecue grills are a common item to be discounted in the US.
Some sales, on the other hand, make no sense. A nail salon branding discount pedicures as a Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday sale makes no sense, and an office supply store reducing the cost of boxes of paper for Spring Break is equally incoherent.
