After all, there’s no limit to imagination, or cost for sets, costumes, and special effects. But in the end, it’s about, well, the finish. The male consumer’s ability to relate to the cumshot is by far the reason for pornography’s focus on it. Historically, men were the primary viewers of porn over women. That said, the ladies are now more regular viewers as sexual mores have changed.
While some women find the cumshot to be disgusting, others find it arousing. There are a few ladies who specifically like the taste of semen, or the act of swallowing it. Assuming the male partner is free of disease, cum itself is harmless. In fact, various analyses found seminal fluid rich in nutrients and contains more than 200 distinct proteins.
In this month’s column, we’re going to talk about cumshots and their dominant role in most forms of pornography. We’ll look at the many diverse ways to spill the seed. We’ll also ponder the ways 3DX can depict the cumshot as artists wrestle with the technical difficulties of fluid simulation.
A predictable sequence
Sex scenes follow a predictable sequence, whether it’s in real life or a 3DX depiction: foreplay, penetrative intercourse, and then orgasm. It’s like a three-act play, except the climax comes at the end in the form of the male orgasm.
The camera zooms in on the penis, waiting for its last strokes to resolve with a torrent of semen. Female orgasms don’t feature such an obvious calling card, which is one reason pornography’s primary finish is the cumshot.

“The cumshot, or, as some refer to it, ‘the money shot,’ is the most important element in the movie and everything else should be sacrificed at its expense if necessary,” opines Steven Ziplow, author of The Film Maker’s Guide to Pornography. His book was published in 1977, at the height of the porno chic era.
From the beginning, the cumshot was the emphasis; proof of orgasm and proof that the sex was real. By now, the standard porn tropes are so well established that the cumshot itself has multiple types and the slang to go with it.
A lack of data
Scholarly surveys on sexual practices are rare to begin with. Certainly no recent studies exist when it comes to distinguishing between different types of cumshots. The topic itself is somewhat controversial, with feminists criticizing the emphasis on cumshots.
Many informal polls exist on web forums for porn sites, but they’re often simply a blizzard of disorganized posts. I reviewed several and there seems to be a preference for facials involving swallowing (33%) and facials without swallowing (26%), with creampies in last place (12%). None of this is scientific in any way, as no attempt was made to collect demographic data (or engage in selection of respondents).

Cumshots by type
The word “cum” itself appears to come from the word “come” and its suggestion of arriving at a destination. In fact, “come” is often the slang term for orgasm in non-English languages. Take Chinese, a language in which sexual slang is often quite simple and literal. Chinese girls have asked me “are you about to arrive?” in Chinese, during sex. In Spanish, a common term is venirse, which means literally “to come to a place.”
As for the titular fluid itself, English offers a practically unlimited variety of terms. Just to name a few for your amusement, we have:

Facial
The cum is shot over the woman’s face and she deliberately keeps her mouth closed. Often the fluid flies everywhere and it can be an eye irritant if it manages to get into the eyes. Seen by some as demeaning to the woman, and certain to upset the lady if it goes into her hair. Creampie
This can be vaginal or anal, and tends to be less commonly depicted than some sort of facial. Women often find the act far more sensual. It certainly is more intimate since it carries the risk of pregnancy (unless delivered anally, of course). The sight of a woman’s vagina, anus, or the space in between, slathered with semen, is tremendously arousing to me personally. In my personal life I often dive right back in.

Body Shot
This seems to me the most random type of cumshot. Whether it’s the back, the butt, or the chest, the male seems to choose no obvious target. The exception would be the boob shot. Some porn scenes feature women cupping their breasts together to rub them along their partners’ engorged shafts in hopes of provoking an eruption. Not surprisingly, people with a foot fetish focus on their feet; some websites are devoted to cumming on women’s feet, with the recipient often tasting the pearls of semen as it drips down their toes.
Cumshots in 3DX
A key problem with shooting live-action pornography is the lack of reliable cumshots. Often, the most prized male performers are men who have perfected the ability to ejaculate on command. They can also cum multiple times if necessary per scene and store up massive amounts of semen for discharge.

None of this matters in the wonderful realm of 3DX. One of the most high-profile cumshots in 3DX “came” – I couldn’t hold back the puns any longer – from the 3DX character Sayako, a buxom dickgirl with dark red and black hair and a massive penis. She appears in Miro’s seminal masterpiece, Girlfriends 4 Ever and its associated add-on content.
In one memorable scene, Sayako is penetrating Tara, her partner in the classic missionary position when, unable to restrain herself, she pulls out her fire hose and unleashes a high-velocity torrent all over her blond partner’s face. Tara’s face snaps back as if struck and she almost appears to choke on the river of cum.
Stimulating Technical Difficulties
Of course, one difficulty of cumshots in 3DX is the rendering of the liquid itself. The visual effect is complex, because semen is both translucent and cloudy; it also alternates between being a viscous, sticky cream and a free-flowing liquid. This makes depicting a stream of semen especially challenging, since the trajectory doesn’t follow a predictable path.
I am far less knowledgeable than many talented artists on Affect3D, like Ickycrane, Zzomp, and Miro. But I know they seek to evolve their depictions of the cumshot, both in terms of creativity and technical ability.
Cumshots are one of the areas where artistic license offers endless possibilities with none of the real-life logistical headaches. Let’s hope cumshots continue to see colorful, outrageous depictions in 3DX. And if you’re a viewer who prefers a more realistic approach, that’s easy too: Conjuring less semen is easier than more.
