Since the 20^th and, more specifically, 21^st centuries, the continuing evolution of sexual stimulation has come to yet another logical extension of humanity’s diverse taste in arousal. This newer extension is 3D pornography often created using the Rhinoceros 3D software, and is affectionately referred to as simply 3DX. If you are reading this article, then you are most likely well acquainted with the rendered delights of perfectly crafted beauties performing whatever act their designer wishes. If not, I would direct you to Miro’s fabulous article explaining and arguing for the many benefits 3DX has going for it. A frequently spouted critique of 3DX would fault the genre as never being as good as “the real thing,” i.e. pornography with human actors/subjects. This is a highly contentious point for more reasons than the easy reversal of saying that no porn is “the real thing,” i.e. sex. In this article, I will argue that the merits of 3DX are philosophically identical to that of “real porn” through the tenets of subjective idealism and structural linguistics.

First, we must understand why “real porn” doesn’t even exist in the first place by defining subjective idealism and structural linguistics. Subjective  idealism (sometimes referred to as “immaterialism”), is a school of thought first formulated by an 18^th century philosopher named George Berkeley  who penned the concept in his 1710 A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge. In this seminal work, Berkeley challenges 17^th   century realist philosopher John Locke and his belief that the world is a material place composed of both matter and mind. Berkeley argues instead  that one cannot conceive an object existing unperceived by stating that, “all the [world] have not any subsistence without a mind […] [if] they are not    actually perceived by me, or do not exist in my mind or that of any other […] they must have no existence at all.”¹ This may seem familiar to you if    you’ve ever been asked about a tree falling in the forest with nobody around to hear it. For Berkeley, the world can logically only be composed of immaterial minds which perceive ideas as opposed to Locke’s belief in both mind and material matter. More simply, Berkeley’s well-known maxim “esse est percipi” or “to be is to be perceived,” illustrates the idea. The object, Berkeley uses furniture in his example but I like to think of Charlize Theron (which is not to insinuate that she is a mere object), does not actually exist as we perceive it. Instead, the perceiver (you and me) has only a perception filtered through our own unique lens (I see Charlize in an entirely different way than you). Thus, individual ideas trump the true existence of objects. Think of Locke as the critiquing voice of 3DX, claiming that because Sayako exists in a virtual state as opposed to a “real,” she isn’t the same as Sasha Grey, and is somehow lesser because of it. Berkeley and the 3DX fans, however, argue that Sasha Grey isn’t “real” either, and that they are principally the same.

Now, if you are buying Berkeley’s immaterial argument, you may suddenly think that Affect3D is actually the greatest pornography site in the world (which wouldn’t necessarily be incorrect) and that 3DX is the logical conclusion to all porn because someone has designed Tara’s perfect body and therefore knows her programmable truth value. I know my model exists because I rendered her, right? Well, this simply isn’t so. Instead, think of 3DX as a literal representation of subjective idealism. Although the entanglement of language and subjective idealism is only alluded to by Berkeley himself, he does consider ideas, which is how the human mind is supposed to interpret the material word (consequently fictionalizing it), to be subject to irrelevant descriptors, “great and small, swift and slow, are allowed to exist nowhere without the mind, being entirely relative, and changing as the frame or position of the organ of sense varies.”² This sort of thinking is precursory to the work of Swiss structural linguist Ferdinand de Saussure; whose Course in General Linguistics (c. 1916) argued that language is a formal system of differential linguistic signs. All words are a sign, and all signs are composed of two parts: the signifier and the signified. Essentially, the signifier is a phonetic sound or construction of the word, while the signified is a concept, or combination of ideas that culminate into what the word is conveying. For example: a C-O-C-K is fleshy, cylindrical, topped with a head, hard or soft, possesses a urethra, and so on until what you describe can only apply to the idea of a C-O-C-K. For Saussure and Berkeley, language is how reality is both inherently constructed and arbitrarily interpreted. Saussure’s point on “l’arbitraire du signe” is a double of Berkeley’s previously quoted irrelevant descriptors, “[the signifier] is unmotivated, i.e. arbitrary in that it actually has no natural connection with the signified.”³ C-O-C-K, as we know it, actually has nothing to do with a cock because language is a constructed reality assigning arbitrary meaning to the material world. Nothing can be conceived beyond what we think (perceive) of an object.

Whether by Berkeley’s argument of irrelevancy or Saussure’s principle of arbitrariness, 3DX should be understood as a literal manifestation of how both Berkeley and Saussure would view reality (and therefore porn): Tara is a 3DX model that we perceive with the same predisposed uncertainty as our lovers,  neighbors, or dogs. Why is this important? By both subjective idealism and structural linguistics, 3DX is  definably identical to “real porn.” The reader is good to note that Berkeley and Saussure would argue that  “real porn” does not exist beyond ideas in the first place and thus there is no tangible division between  3DX  and something from professional porn produces or amateur couples. I perceive Ayako’s incredible  fellatio  just as I would Heather Brooke, both of which possess absolutely no difference in terms of objective truth.  Neither Ayako nor Heather can, for a certainty, exist beyond my own filtered and arbitrary perception  of  them. Our reality, which includes porn, is as non-physical as 3DX models. It is then suffice to say that  3DX is a literal construction of ideas that reflects the arbitrary nature of “real porn.”

Aside from simply saying “coming is coming” and so what one comes to is fundamentally irrelevant, I argue  that even beyond the sexual satisfaction, 3DX and “real porn” are philosophically the exact same due to both  having an inherent reliance on the perceiver’s perception of an object. This position carries over to a  multitude of other pornography platforms such as hentai, comics, or the nifty looking virtual sex on the Oculus Rift. It is still fair to have a preference for one type of porn over another, but in a purely philosophical sense, there isn’t really a distinction between the reality of them. At the end of the day, I hope that there is an amount of solace found in the idea that 3DX models, porn stars, and Hollywood actors are just as “real” as the other, though perhaps not in the most ideal, or perhaps objective, of ways.

Which dere is your fetish? In anime and manga there are certain personality traits you’ll find appealing for your viewing pleasure. I’m positive you’ve come across a dere in some form. There are a number of character archetypes that all share the same suffix of “dere.” Today I’d like to talk about the different dere types that remain a constant in today’s anime along with some of my favorites. I’m sure the majority of you reading this are already familiar with your deres, but here’s a little crash course to inform those who don’t.

Deredere: The lovey dovey type. This character is textbook lovestruck for the protagonist. Derederes are usually seen as the characters that go out of their way to make lunches for the hero, walk home with them, and typically don’t find any faults in the MC. This archetype can usually be seen as the iconic character for childhood friend love stories or even school romances. Deredere stories almost always have a happy ending and are so sweet they’ll make your teeth rot.

Tsundere: This character just can’t be honest with their feelings! It’s pretty common to see tsunderes in anime and manga nowadays, but depending on how this personality is portrayed; the character can be incredibly cute. Tsunderes are pretty moody around their crush, but they’re really sweet on the inside. They can range from verbal abuse to full on assault to the object of their affections just to deny their feelings. In hentai, it’s quite the sight to watch their confrontational personality shift into an either very shy or competitive lover. Even after confessing their love to the protagonist, this dere continues to use their tough front, but they’re not as antagonistic to their crush as they were before.

Kuudere: This trait is one of my favorites. Kuuderes are characters that are hard to read due to their doll like expressions and lack of emotion. They prefer to be distant from others, but warm up to the protagonist. Kuuderes usually make the first move and rarely have any shame aside from showing their love for their crush. Others may find this character boring, but it’s the actual emotion they show underneath that makes them so appealing to me.

Dandere: Danderes are often confused with kuuderes but this personality is portrayed as a timid antisocial character that eventually displays their sweet, romantic, and loving side. The protagonist usually initiates making contact with this type only to be brushed off, but over time they get to know the hero. They’re generally shy once they take their relationship with the hero further and it’s that sweet innocence they show that puts them in a class of their own.

Himedere: As the name suggests, himederes have “princess” personalities. This character is either of nobility or sees itself of higher status. Either way this character sees the hero as a lower lifeform unworthy of attention. This type is tough to win over, but certain scenarios occur that allows this princess to soften up to the protagonist. Himederes are usually associated as mistresses in erotic scenarios. It’s pretty exciting that even in the throes of rapture they still act haughty to the object of their affection. This character refuses to show weakness, but can be overwhelmed by the protagonist’s passion. The result often leads to them being submissive which can be an intriguing turnaround. I definitely recommend checking out series focused on this type.

Yandere: You’ve probably heard the phrase “together forever”, but according to yanderes that saying is taken very seriously. These characters aren’t entirely in their right state of mind and often harbor a one-sided love with the protagonist. Remember the Overly Attached Girlfriend meme? Take that but increase the intensity of clinginess and violent outbursts. Yanderes are highly possessive and are prone to murderous tendencies for the sake of their loved one. This type is also associated with the femdom genre, but it’s not always a pleasant experience for the hero. The yandere’s goal while lovemaking is to break the MC’s mind so that MC’s focus will be on the yandere only. Reading and watching them in action can stir up a variety of emotions. On one hand it’s incredibly hot, but on the other it can be downright terrifying. Yandere hentai is one of my top favorite tags, but even I’m wary of the outcome. Their unpredictability makes them both enticing yet frightening. Beware the bad endings.

Eroge! was originally an erotic visual novel developed by Clock Up team Anise. Due to the game’s popularity, in 2011 it became a five episode hentai series. True to the original story, the animated adaptation of Eroge! follows the life of Tomoya Mochizuki, the textbook example of a teenage otaku. Mochizuki loves erotic gaming more than anything and after becoming a college grad, he wants to break into the eroge industry and produce a game of his own. Tomoya’s only problem is that he lacks creativity. He doesn’t have the talent to draw, or the imagination to write a scenario, and he certainly can’t edit graphics, but that doesn’t deter our protagonist from his ambition.

Mochizuki’s luck turns for the better when he sees a help wanted ad for the local studio Flower, and after meeting with the company president, he manages to get a job as an administrator of the company’s website. However his elation at being part of the eroge industry is short-lived as soon as he discovers that Flower is threatened to shut down if they don’t produce a popular title to compensate for their previous failure.

After playing through Flower’s first game, Tomoya realizes that his colleagues know nothing about eroge and lack the insight and understanding required to create a good game. Our protagonist takes it upon himself to save Flower from its peril by sharing his extensive knowledge of erotic gaming with his female co-workers and of course, stimulate their creativity with a few “real life” examples. If you haven’t seen this series yet, you’re in for a real treat!

THE GIRLS/CHARACTERS

Mochizuki’s line of work puts him in quite the fortunate position as the only male on the team. He’s quite the lucky guy to be used as a tool for “research” to spark his colleagues’ creativity. Each episode is comparable to a player route very much like the visual novel, allowing viewers to fully explore the individuality of each heroine. Nowadays you usually get the boy-meets-girl interactions in both print and in animations, but in this tale, there’s actually a plot relevant to the story (I know it’s hard to believe, but I also watch hentai for the plot). Even though the heroines’ personalities are derived from popular “moe” traits, the way their voices (moans especially) are portrayed by their actresses makes them really enticing.

Our first female character is Kisara Himeno, Flower’s main illustrator. She’s a classic tsundere who isn’t too happy about a perverted male being among an all female group. Her wariness of Tomoya only intensified after his “first impression.” She grudgingly accepts his help into making her drawings appear more erotic by experimenting with various forms of foreplay with him. After having nonstop sex with Tomoya, Kisara’s art has improved along with her confidence as she gave examples to her coworkers to help them improve. It could be implied that she is the main heroine due to the fact of being in a relationship with Tomoya at the end of her route.

The second girl is a personal favorite of mine, Momoka Fujiwara, the scenario writer. She’s a true beauty in both looks and personality. Momoka carries herself with nobility and treats our protagonist as the scum of the earth. She’s revealed to be a sadist and decides to improve her writing with roleplay by using Tomoya as her pet. In this route I find Momoka to be especially sexy, her constant denial of the waves of pleasure she receives from “this pig of a man” despite shaking her hips uncontrollably makes her stand out above the rest of the cast. If you ask me, it’s quite the turn on to see a dignified lady unmask her wildly perverted side.

Two more characters also get to experience the joy of sex and game with our eager protagonist, but just a heads up, the heroine Iori Kousaka has some unique fetishes. I wouldn’t say her preferences are a bonerkiller, but if watersports or scat isn’t your thing, be wary nearing the end of episode 5. Despite all that, after watching these heroines explore their true talents and my sheer curiosity for the full story, I even took upon myself to play the actual game! The storyline and love scenes are that good if you ask me.

VOICE/SOUND/MUSIC

If you really want to make an animated hentai arousing the components of sound effects, voices, and music are a necessary contribution. The studio at Clock Up team Anise expertly crafted the essential ingredients that separate great hentai from subpar ones.

The voice acting plays a crucial role when it comes to hentai. I doubt anyone can stomach watching a series listening to characters with little to no emotion. It’s insufferable, especially when the sex scenes have no passion. That’s not the case with Eroge! a prime example of this is our heroine Momoka. When we first meet her, everything about her commands you to treat her like royalty, but when she’s in the mood; she’s a dominating mistress with a sultry tone that will have you begging for her approval. She even has a sweet side that’s shown in her route that contrasts her sadism, but that’s what makes her character more appealing. It’s the actress’s vocal range.

Sound is just as important. Even though hentai is a fantasy, viewers want the sounds to be real. The sounds of copulation, expulsion of love juices, even the creaking sounds of a bed knocking against the wall during sex. Eroge! does a great job putting its sound effects to use, it even has a well timed few comedic moments that result in Tomoya’s punishment for his lewd thoughts despite his staff position. There’s also a certain level of eroticism that should be appreciated in this anime. It really goes into detail with the characters’ first times. The sounds were reproduced with excellent quality that will guarantee a satisfying reaction.

Lastly, the music of Clock Up’s production is a simple soundtrack. It’s not like it isn’t spectacular, but the catchy tunes it provides really makes it a mood setter. It’s enjoyable enough that you might get a few songs stuck in your head like me.

ANIMATION

The art, color, and animation are all replications based on the original visual novel. It truly is an animated adaptation brought to life. It’s not a simple copy-and-paste job because everything involving movement from thrusting to expressions has proven to be fluid. The studio may have condensed the content of a 10+ hour game, but it’s plain to see how much detail was put into each route.

LONG-TERM VALUE

I definitely recommend watching it. It’s an underrated gem full of well timed humor, steamy love scenes, and an actual plot that’s enjoyable.

Have you ever watched a series that was so cheesy you couldn’t help but watch it? When I came across T-Rex’s Binkan Athlete to suit my swimsuit needs, it felt like I was watching a bad series hoping it would get better. Unfortunately my expectations were too high. I admit the cover art of the sexy main heroine piqued my interest along with the plot summary, but after completing this series I couldn’t help but feel unsatisfied.

The story is centered on Shigeru, a university student who recently gained a part-time job at a prestigious gym as a masseuse. His supervisor Ayako decides to put his skills to the test by having him fondle her breasts only to discover that he has “golden fingers.” To put it simply, Shigeru has the magic touch when it comes to massage therapy. Ayako informs him that he is required to help the promising female athletes relieve their “stress” so that they may continue to provide accolades to their gym. Not a bad job right?

Binkan Athlete starts off interesting after that introduction, but it quickly grows stagnant as the story continues due to the fact there is no conflict and the main character has no personality.

He literally has the magic touch.

THE GIRLS/CHARACTERS

Throughout this 30 minute episode our protagonist encounters four of the gym’s finest athletes. After teasing the lovely MILF Ayako at the beginning it would’ve been nice if she was also included for a session. His first client is Megumi, a volleyball star who knows little about sex aside from the occasional lust and frustration she feels.

Shigeru proceeds to relax the star athlete with a thorough breast massage leading to a release from her pink petals. While coming down from her climax she decides to repay his generosity in kind by satisfying his desires.

The story itself has an uneventful plot and as I’ve mentioned before there is no conflict whatsoever. For me it’s hard to stay interested in a story where everything is going the hero’s way. It might be because I’m old fashioned. It does however alternate different fetishes for each character from fellatio, doggy-style, tanlines, and even tights so at least the erotic scenes aren’t repetitive.

VOICE/SOUND/MUSIC

The voice acting alone is enough to make one cringe. There’s no emotion in any of the characters’ voices. Mix that with 80’s themed music and you’ve got a recipe for a corny old school porno. Binkan Athlete would honestly be better if the voices didn’t sound so forced in the love scenes. Since there’s no passion in the acting it’s hard to fully enjoy the eroticism of the anime. The sound effects alone are what you’d expect from a hentai series, so at least that part was done right. Although the music is one of those keystroke tracks you hear in classic porn. You might enjoy it or you might find it hilarious, either way it’s catchy.

ANIMATION

T-Rex’s animation was made in 2009, but the designs appear to be a little dated, almost in a 90’s moe fashion. I’m aware that every artist has their own style so I won’t criticize that aspect, but for me as a hentai fan there’s a certain aspect of realism I appreciate in the characters designs. Binkan Athlete’s designs for their heroines are a tad bit unbalanced. Don’t get me wrong, I love big breasted anime girls as much as the next guy, but not if they’re obscenely larger than the girl’s torso.

It’s a wonder how the skater sisters can skate so well with mounds that massive. The only character with realistic proportions is Asaka. As for the animation, it seemed to be in synch with the sound effects throughout the love scenes. From penetration to climax T-Rex Production did a decent job orchestrating those necessary elements together.

LONG-TERM VALUE

Binkan Athlete is not the worst hentai I’ve seen, but it’s certainly not the best. Honestly I kept watching it hoping it would get better to no avail. It’s pretty much a “to each their own” type of story. For me, it’s 30 minutes of my life I won’t be getting back.
